intolerance right here on campus.

on monday morning of this week... the day before the elections, a group called 'viking conservatives' posted about a million posters around campus stating things like 'vote yes' (which is fine..) but other very offensive things like legalizing homosexual marriages would lead to 'pedophilia, beastiality and sex with trees.' Not to mention that they posted these things all over the campus, but they flooded the GLOW (gay, lesbian, other, whatever) house with them. they specifically targeted this house and plastered it with truly offensive, homophobic comments.

needless to say, i was pissed off here on campus even before the election took place and the people of wisconsin 'spoke'. i'm all for these people to have their opinions, even though i think they are incredibly illogical and asinine, and it is important that people should have an avenue for voicing their opinions--- BUT that shouldn't mean that you can personally attack a specific group and post blatantly hurtful things (especially on a house that is geared toward the thing that you take issue with).

i was so sad to hear that there are people on this campus who could be that insensitive and that hurtful. but more importantly they are pretty much refusing to apologize and the administration is doing mostly nothing. i feel like that is even sadder. why would or should these people be allowed to harass and post hateful things? i can guarantee that if it said 'black people are monkeys' (or other such equal bullshit) that they would face severe punishment, if not expulsion from lawrence.

the election made me very, very sad. and very, very angry. mostly because we shouldn't have even voted on this stupid amendment. i don't understand why we would vote on something that people already don't have the right to do. same-sex couple have NEVER been able to marry in wisconsin- so what is the point of further legislating something that people already don't have the right to. not to mention that we now are writing blatant discrimination into the state constitution of wisconsin. it is all so horrible.

the only positive thing i can see is that this may be our generations issue. the issue like the women's lib or civil rights or protest of vietnam, that unites us. that brings us out of our usually apathetic lives and DO something. fight against hate and intolerance. finally do something about the horrible things that are going on around us.

it's about time.

hope is out there... i think... if we take the responsibility of citizenship in our own hands.
